About Us
The serpentine stone is known as the dream stone. While green in color, the shade and texture of each stone varies just as the dreams of our youth are unique to each individual.
Once accepted into our program, every new Serpentine Youth receives a handmade necklace with a serpentine stone at its center. No matter what challenges they face or hardships life hands them, our youth can look at that stone and know we are here for them and that we are not going anywhere as long as they continue to reach for their dreams.
Personalized Mentorship
Personalized mentorship is the foundation of the Serpentine Project program model. Each Serpentine Youth is recommended by his or her mentor, who is assigned to them through the Alliance for Children’s Rights. The Serpentine staff meets with each youth regularly and works alongside his or her mentor to help set goals, identify and eliminate obstacles, and monitor personal progress.
Goal Setting
The dreams of each youth lie at the very heart of the Serpentine Project. The first stage of the Serpentine Project is a goal setting exercise. Together with the Serpentine staff, Serpentine Youth set realistic goals that can be achieved over the course of a year and will ultimately lead to a future of greatness. The goal setting exercise is reviewed quarterly.
Life Grants
Each Serpentine Youth can apply for Life Grants through The Serpentine Project. These financial resources must be used to assist our youth in achieving their goals. Example Life Grants include funds for tuition, books and supplies, rent assistance and medical costs.
Life Skills Trainings
Due to our intimate program model, life skills trainings are tailored to the individual needs of each youth. Example trainings include resume building, personal budget management, study-skills, interview techniques, finding a primary care physician, obtaining internships and job shadow opportunities. These trainings help prepare Serpentine Youth for a successful future.
The Power of Dreams
We believe that the most powerful force in the lives of our Serpentine Youth is the vision they have for their future. We believe that each Serpentine Youth is entitled to dream for a better tomorrow and we are committed to helping them reach their dreams by setting achievable goals today.
Each Path is Unique
We respond to the diverse needs of our youth by maintaining a program model that allows each youth to set his or her own goals and forge his or her own path towards success.
Accountability
We hold Serpentine Youth accountable to the goals they set, the commitments they make and the actions they take throughout the program year, just as we hold our staff and volunteers accountable to their commitments and responsibilities.
Circle of Honesty
We aim to establish an honest exchange with each Serpentine Youth wherein they can discuss their life, dreams and challenges without fear or shame.
Empowerment
We empower our youth to create an achievable vision for their future and to become self-sustaining and contributing members of their communities.
Respect and Understanding
We respect each youth and understand that their individual life experiences have profoundly affected who they are today and what they have accomplished.
